1916-2004
Youth
Roy George was born in Burlington, Vermont on April 14, 1916. He is the ninth child born to Nelson and Delina (Bouchard) Chagnon. Roy attended Nazareth School and graduated from the 8th grade. Roy dropped out of school to go to work because his father death. At a very young age, he worked for his grandfather Louis Bouchard in his firewood and coal yard that was located on 200 North Champlain Street in Burlington. Many times during the winter, Roy and his brother Chet would ride in the back of his grandfather’s pick up truck, while they headed out to Bolton, Vt and collect firewood.
Work
In 1939, Roy worked at the Cotton Mill for 3 months before it closed down. He then went to work for Tulatex (A.C.Whiting Co) where he was employed 5 years. He also worked for the Edlund Can Opener Company for a few years. In 1946, Roy went to work for the Burlington Water Dept and was employed with them for 34 years until he retired in 1980 at the age of 64.
Military
Roy enlisted in the US Navy in 1944. Upon his return from his tour of duty in the Philippines, he went to work for the Burlington Water Dept 1946.
Marriage
Roy married Alice Aurora Poirier on August 26, 1939 at St. Joseph’s Church in Burlington, Vermont. Alice is the daughter of Joseph and Clara (Monty) Poirier. She was born August 15, 1920 in Newport, Vermont. She died at the age of 64 on January 16, 1985 in Burlington, Vermont. Alice is buried in New Mount Calvary Cemetery in Burlington, Vermont.
When they were first married they lived above Ma (Delina) Chagnon, at 32 Drew St. Burlington. They lived here for 3 years before moving to an apartment on the corner of North Champlain and Cherry St. In 1954 they purchased their first and only home at 12 Russell Street in Burlington. Alice was born in 1920 in South Troy, Vermont and died 1985 in Burlington, Vermont.
Children
Alice and Roy had 4 children, the first child, a son, Raymond Roy in 1941. Shortly after Raymond’s birth they moved to 11-1/2 Cedar Street in Burlington. During the 13 years that they lived here, they had a second son Larry David, and a daughter Linda Clara born in 1950. In 1954 Roy and Alice purchased their first home, which was located at 12 Russell St. Burlington, VT. Which then their fourth child, a daughter, Barbara Ann.
Interests
Roy loved to garden, fish, play the harmonica and do projects around the house. He enjoyed getting together with family and friends and play horse shoes and cards.

Roy died January 12, 2004 in Burlington, Vermont. He is buried with his wife Alice in New Mount Calvary Cemetery in Burlington, Vermont.
